Ever heard of the expression slow fashion? I had not until I actually started thinking about what I am wearing and where it comes from.
Fashion today is all about change and making us need things we don´t have. New collections in stores every week, cheap prices, lots and lots of options. This is called fast fashion – large quantities to a good price but often with bad quality (tears easily). This increases our need to buy more, which makes us demand lower prices, which has an effect on where and how the clothes are produced (bad conditions at factories and toxic waste is something I think most of us have heard about at some point), and lowers the quality even more. The bad circle is created.
The slow fashion movement is trying to balance this. Good quality, ethically and sustainably produced, more classic garments, fewer items. It´s about creating consciuos and well thought-out consumer patterns. Fashion can still fun and great and filled with inspiration and your personality. With slow fashion you will know that the price of your outfit is not destruction or exploitation.
Slow fashion often means organic cotton, recycled plastics and innovative alternative materials. This does not, however, mean that it is always vegan. Sustainable production is always much better than not, but there are brands that use for example animal leather and wool in their garments. If you ask the dead cow if she thinks this was a sustainable choice, the answer would be no (obviously, she´s dead). I´ve also written about vegan materials and non-vegan materials if you want to learn more.
So, slow fashion is a good thing. Just make sure that the products you buy are good for all living beings, not only humans.
